Scheduling Your Surgery

  • Talk with your physician about your planned surgery or procedure.
  • Be aware of any changes in your physical condition-such as sore throat, cold, or fever-prior to surgery.
  • Notify your physician of any such symptoms as soon as possible.
  • Consult your physician if any changes occur in your condition prior to surgery.
The Night Before Your Surgery or Procedure
  • Please do not eat or drink anything after midnight.
  • Please do not consume any water, gum, mints, or vitamins unless your anesthesiologist has given you special instructions stating otherwise.This is very important for your safety. If you do not follow this rule, your procedure may have to be delayed or rescheduled.
  • If your child is having surgery or a procedure,
    the nurse will discuss special feeding instructions.
  • If you are taking medications, the nurse will give you instructions on what you should do.
The Morning Of Your Surgery or Procedure
  • DO NOT eat or drink anything in the morning,
    unless you have been given special instructions stating otherwise.
  • DO NOT wear jewelry, watches, or piercings jewelry.
  • WEAR comfortable clothing that you can change easily and that will not bind the site of your surgery or procedure. Good choices are sweat pants, a
    t-shirt, shorts and socks.
  • Bring denture cup and/or glasses case or contact lens container.
  • LEAVE valuables at home.
  • REMEMBER to bring your insurance card and a
    photo ID with you.
  • ARRIVE one hour before your surgery or procedure to complete your admission forms, sign your consent, and visit with your anesthesiologist.
  • Your anesthesiologist will discuss your procedure
    with you, tell you exactly what will happen before, during and after your surgery or procedure, and answer any remaining questions you may have.
  • BRING A FRIEND or a family member to wait for
    you during your surgery or procedure.
    REMEMBER: YOu must have a responsible adult to accompany/drive you home.
After Your Surgery or Procedure
  • You will rest in our recovery room under the care
    of specially trained nurses.
  • Your anesthesiologist will monitor your condition.
  • You may e sleepy or dizzy after your surgery or procedure.
  • YOU MUST HAVE A RESPONSILE ADULT WITH YOU TO DRIVE YOU HOME.
  • Nurses and physicians will answer your questions
    and give you instructions.
  • You will receive a written copy of these instructions. Please follow them carefully.
  • Be prepared to go home and finish your recovery there.
  • Have someone plan to stay at home with you
    through the next 24 hours.
  • DO NOT make any important decisions, drive, or operate machinery for 24-hours after your surgery or procedure.
When You Get Home
  • Patients often experience minor after effects following anesthesia, such as drowsiness, muscle aches, a sore throat, headaches, or dizziness.
  • Nausea may also be present, but vomiting is less common.
  • These side effects decline rapidly in the hours following surgery, but may take several days before they are gone completely.
  • Plan to take it easy for a few days until you feel
    back to normal.
  • Your post-procedure instructions will include your physician's orders describing your activity level.
  • Know that a period of recovery at home is common and is to be expected.
  • Contact your surgeon if you have questions about what you can and cannot do, when you can return
    to work, and how active you can be.
